Pictures in "Suzy O’Mullane :'Mick'"

29 Oct 2006 - 29 Oct 2006

‘Mick’ by Suzy O’Mullane.
Suzy O’Mullane’s series of portraits of Mulcahy are intimate, unashamed and tender paintings yet they are painted with such candour that we can look at them unabashed. Observing one man over and over again through her moods and his, O’Mullane has produced her own documentary in paint and canvas. Her powers of observation, draughtsmanship and colour reveal a man who is troubled, tired, handsome, passionate and funny. These are ordinary people with extraordinary gifts and what started out casually as observation work developed into a powerful and dramatic body of work telling a human story of frailty and beauty. Reality TV and the internet webcam were never more revealing, nor as dignified, as poetic or as adult.
Jane Ross, curator of O’Mullane’s 2005 exhibition ‘The Colour of Love and Loss’ at Cork’s Triskel Gallery says “her work has already made a powerful impression on expressive figurative painting and drawing in Ireland and abroad. Her work has reflected references to major figurative masters whose work she has admired, such as Paula Rego, Lucien Freud, Frida Kahlo, and Kathe Kollwitz.” Her powerful and provocative images are rooted in careful observation which is reshapes and redefines to evoke her personal response to her subject.
Suzy O’Mullane, a graduate of UCC and of Crawford College of Art, has worked for some years in Paris and from her studio in Cork. She has participated in residencies in Berlin and at Cill Riallig, the artists’ village set up in Kerry by Wexford businesswoman, Noelle Campbell-Sharp. O’Mullane is also co-founder of the well established ‘Cork Arts Trail’ and acted as its director for six years after its inception in 1996. Suzy O’Mullane is represented in Dublin by The Blue Leaf Gallery.
‘Mick’ runs from Monday 30th October until Saturday 11th November.
