Pictures in "Carol Hodder : Wetlands"
5 Apr 2007 - 29 Apr 2007
'WETLANDS: Paintings from North Mayo' is a series of startling landscape paintings inspired by the wild beauty encountered during Carol Hodder's recent residency in Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
‘This body of work owes its genesis to the landscape of North Mayo. Mayo represents a “still point of the turning world”. Two residencies at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation during the winter of 2006-2007, enabled me to spend further solitary time in an exceptional place.
‘Wetlands’ is a metaphor for life. The tools and paint my divining-stick, seeking to find the hidden source. It is this seeking of what’s underneath and hidden and bringing it to light, which is of interest to me, and painting is the creative process I engage with to enable this un-earthing. That landscape offers a conduit is no surprise since I have lived close to the land all my life, deriving solace and benefit from this familiar place and a fuller understanding of the endless variety that nature imposes on everything.’
The artist wishes to thank the founders Margo Dolan and Peter Maxwell, for their ongoing support and encouragement, and administrators Una Forde and Chrissie Tighe for their help and assistance. Special thanks also to the people of Ballycastle. The Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
