Pictures in "Neil Shawcross : Paintings & Prints"

19 Oct 2007 - 10 Nov 2007

One of Ireland’s most significant and distinctive painters, Shawcross has made an international reputation in the genres of portraiture and still life.
A masterly draughtsman and a spectacular colourist, he revels in exploring combinations of complementary hues and sensual contrasts of great intensity and drama.
In all his work, Shawcross deliberately reveals the act of painting. Splashes, stains and broadly painted borders, frames within a frame, emphasise the painted rectangle.
This exhibition at the Pigyard Gallery sees the artist return
to his favourite themes of still life and the nude in paintings and prints on a more
domestic scale. They show vitality and spareness, spontaneity
and sureness of line which is always central to his work. Once again, the colour vermilion
dominates his palette. Against this, his subject is stated in assured strokes of fluid black which capture form
and movement. Printmaking, long a feature of Shawcross’ output is represented here by some prints
made in summer 2007 in Canada in collaboration with master printmaker, Stu Oxley, in select editions of 6.
